Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date
The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
