McDonald's has pulled a holiday advert created with generative AI after facing significant online backlash.

The 45-second spot was created via AI video tools and was originally released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online criticized the employment of AI in the commercial. A number of called it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This experience is an valuable learning as we explore the proper use of Artificial Intelligence," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of things that can go wrong during the holidays, with the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Campaigns that incorporate AI tools have emerged as a growing trend among prominent brands, especially for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: Because segments created using generative AI are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also provoked fears about job displacement in the creative industry, with some commenters noting it could affect opportunities for actors.

Defense from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the development took "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the response for other AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand according to analysis received a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, several companies have likewise faced criticism for employing the technique in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the ongoing debate within the advertising and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
