The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
